Umami, Bright & Sharp

First Harvest Matcha | Rare, heirloom.

From Wazuka, Kyoto, Japan - Single origin

Net wt. 30g

Umi matcha’s Zairai Matcha is a single-origin tea produced by Obubu Tea Farms in Wazuka, Kyoto, Japan. Zairai is extremely rare to be found. Sourced from the Zairai tea plants, the tea leaves are then ground slowly with a traditional stone mill, resulting in a very fine powder.

Zairai 在来 is grown from century old seed grown tea trees, making every plant naturally unique unlike most matcha which comes from cloned cuttings. It accounts for only 2% of Japan’s total tea production.

It is increasingly rare to come across zairai matcha and we’re happy to provide the experience of what tea may have tasted like in old Japan.

About the Farm

Obubu Tea Farms

From the hidden kingdom of green tea and the primary producer of Uji tea - Wazuka, Kyoto where the Obubu family has been growing tea for years now. Akihiro (head farmer) discovered his love for tea when he took up a part-time job as a farmhand in Wazuka. He made the decision to leave college and devote his time to mastering the art of tea farming, driven by a desire to empower independent farmers and share the joy of Japanese tea.

We’re proud to source this heirloom matcha from Obubu Tea Farm, a producer dedicated to making exceptional Japanese tea more accessible to tea lovers around the world.
